The National Chambal Sanctuary (NCS) is a 400 km stretch of the river Chambal and a 1 to 6 km wide swathe of the ravines on both sides of the river, covering an area of 1235 sq. km. The calm and gentle waters of the Chambal River are best explored on boats and our skilled boatmen ensure spectacular opportunities to view and photograph the wildlife, and stunning landscape. The accompanying Lodge naturalists provide expert information on the Chambal wildlife. The river Safari is a most relaxing, enjoyable, and special experience. The access point for the NCS is 22 km from the Lodge, 30+ minutes’ drive.

This 3-4 hours Jeep Safari Jeep Safari heads southwest from the Lodge, about 30 km towards the Chambal Ravines, for excellent sightings of Blackbuck deer and numerous dry land birds including the Indian Courser. Driving and walking across agricultural fields set at the edge of the Chambal ravines, this safari is also a fascinating journey through remote hamlets and habitations.

The Sarus Crane Conservation Reserve begins at a distance of around 30 km from the Lodge, extending to about 100km. A widespread wetland area, interspersed by cultivated fields, it is the breeding ground of the largest congregation of Sarus Cranes in India. Although not a protected area, since 1999 the Supreme Court, recognising its importance as a habitat has designated the area a reserve with restrictions on development. This 4-5 hours Jeep Safari through low-lying wetland areas north of the Yamuna, excellent for spotting Sarus Cranes and other wetland birds, involves some walking and is recommended for serious birdwatchers.

The sprawling grounds of the Lodge are home to numerous birds and small mammals. Our resident naturalists are available to guide early morning and late afternoon rambles through the lodge grounds, farms, and surrounding countryside. The walk helps illustrate the rural community’s reverence for all life and peaceful coexistence with the several species of birds and mammals that abound in the countryside. Printed scientific checklists providing details of the 200+ species found in and around the Lodge are provided to all visitors.
The late evening night walk around the Lodge, with our resident naturalists, is the best time to go looking for Palm Civet Cats, Jungle Cats, Jackals, Foxes, Jungle Hares, Fruit Bats, Hedgehogs, and the Indian Striped Hyenas. read less
